After extensive negotiations, the Supply Chain Act was passed by the German Bundestag (on 11 June 2021) and the Bundesrat (on 25 June 2021). The law creates human rights and environmental due diligence obligations for a number of companies. Those concerned must make reasonable efforts to ensure that there are no violations of human rights in their own business operations and in the supply chain. It applies since 1 January 2023 for companies with at least 3.000 employees and from 1 January 2024 for companies with at least 1.000 employees in Germany.

Legally, there's a particular need for adaptation and updating in the areas of compliance, purchasing and contract drafting.
