Major European patent law publishing project ahead of the Unified Patent Court led by our specialists

Our experts have led the publication of a uniquely comprehensive and practical guide to European patent law, ahead of the much-anticipated arrival of the Unified Patent Court.

The book, titled A Practitioner's Guide to European Patent Law, for National Practice and the Unified Patent Court, covers all the areas of substantive patent law that practitioners and clients will need to guide them through European patent litigation.

Now in its second edition, new content includes new chapters dedicated to the substantive aspects of FRAND, declarations, and evidence. There is also an expanded commentary on construction, including common terms used in patent claims.

New jurisdictions are also included in the latest guide, with contributions from Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland helping to create an even more comprehensive view of the European patents sector.

The latest edition has been lauded in the field, with EU Law Live saying it is "a very valuable tool in a practitioner's day-to-day practice" and IPKAT praised the guide as "a useful reference to litigators, patent attorneys and in-house counsels throughout Europe".

Dr Paul England, senior professional support lawyer and lead author of the book, said: "It's great to see the hard work of putting together this new guide come to fruition, ahead of the UPC opening.

"The key approach with the book is that it addresses European patent law by subject area, outlining the common ground between the national approaches and providing a complete guide for the possible application of the law in national courts and the UPC in the future.

"I'd like to thank the many contributors for the book, many of which are sourced from our UK and international team in the firm, for their expertise and time."

The book is led by Dr Paul England, with contributions from other European friends and partners including our patents specialists Michael Washbrook, Mattias Rätzén, Dr Nora E Wessendorf, Tobias Baus, Verena Bertram, Jan Phillip Rektorschek, Aurel Damian Roscher, Julius Zacharias, David Mulder and Andrew Payne.
